weird & quirky food facts

Calling all trivia geeks! Slow Food USA is gathering weird-but-true facts about food and farming, especially ones that highlight how awesome slow food is OR how broken our food & farming system is.

Here's an example: "Due to our love of deli meats, the modern industrial turkey has been bread to have such a large breast that male turkeys cannot successfully mount female turkeys. Females must be artificially inseminated. Traditional breeds don't have this 'issue' and they taste better too."

Eww. That's gross. But true. Think you have some weird ones to throw in the ring? Submit them by clicking the link above. Submissions are due by Monday, October 3rd. The top three in each category will win a Slow Food USA market bag. The two categories are highlighting 1.) why slow food is better than fast food or 2.) how gross the industrial food and farming system is.

If you can, please include a citation. Entries that are snarky, punchy, quippy, funny, or just downright gross have a better chance of winning. Good luck!
